The Fibre of Freo
THE STORIES BEHIND THE FREMANTLE JUMPER
SINCE 1995
Mandated to be different and motivated by more than a century of local
football history, the Fremantle Football Club’s jumper has set it apart from
the pack for the best part of three decades. From its earliest, anchor-inspired
designs to the sleek, modern chevrons adorned by the men’s and women’s
teams, the club has embraced its football roots while forging a clear identity
of its own. For many fans, the jumper is the most significant motif of those
decades spent willing the Dockers towards ultimate glory.
Season by season, The Fibre of Freo breaks down the jumper history of
the Fremantle Dockers—an encyclopedic reference point showcasing
30 seasons of player-issued and match-worn jumpers, as well as some
quirky anomalies, leveraging the collections and knowledge of dedicated
collectors. Club legends, past and present, describe what it means
to play for the jumper, as it has evolved.
A football jumper is so much more than a piece of fabric—it’s a tactile
acknowledgement and celebration of a club’s history and culture in real time.
Written by Jack McGinn with Erin Warwick, and showcasing the photography of
Josh Ludlow, The Fibre of Freo aims to capture that connection, all in one place.
